Our skin is the largest organ of our body and can be a helpful window to our health. Skin concerns such as dry or oily skin, acne, rashes, even loss or thinning of hair can give us good insight that our health is not optimal. We can even dig down deeper and observe the coloration, temperature, or elasticity of our skin. Skin conditions can be connected to many different health imbalances.

A major culprit of non-optimal skin health is inflammation in our gut. In order to heal our skin we must first heal inside out. An important step in the healing process can be done when we recognize food sensitivities. The top offenders being gluten, dairy and sugar. Food elimination diets or food sensitivity testing are important steps to getting to the root cause of our symptoms. Once food sensitivities have been addressed and removed we then must work on healing the gut and removing the inflammatory processes. Inflammation in the gut can lead to many nutritional deficiencies that we can then observe through the skin. For example lack of healthy fats or fat soluble vitamins can showcase as dry and flakey skin.
Another concern when addressing skin dysfunction is hormonal balance. This issue can also relate to the gut or may be its own concern. If our hormones are out of balance, they can disrupt the health of our skin. It is important to make sure that we have the ability to eliminate excess hormones and that we are producing the correct ratios. A great way to gain insight on if this could be causing our symptoms is through hormone testing.
Continuing to dig deeper to find the root cause of our symptoms we must also take a look at our ability to regulate blood sugar. Many have connected blood sugar imbalances with skin concerns and have coined acne “diabetes of the skin.” This is a reflection of what we eat, but also how our bodies handle what we eat.
Another major concern is thinning of hair or hair loss. There is not always a blanket answer for these symptoms, but a comprehensive blood test could give important insight when looking at anemias, thyroid health, and deficiencies.
In order to love the skin we are in, we must take care of it from the inside out. We can spend copious amounts of money on the newest skin and beauty product, but if we don’t address the root cause of our symptoms then we are merely placing an expensive band aid on the problem.
